Deel vs Remote: Is a Tech Giant Right for Your Global Team?

Overview

  • Deel and Remote now charge the same headline EOR fee: $599 per employee per month, after Remote cut its price from $699 in October 2026.
  • Deel wins on breadth, with EOR in 130+ countries and HR, payroll, hiring and equipment tools on one platform.
  • Remote wins on structure. It owns its own legal entity in South Africa and charges less for contractor management ($29 against Deel’s $49).
  • Both charge a flat dollar fee per head, which hits hardest on South African salaries. On a R20,000 monthly salary, $599 adds roughly half the salary again.
  • If South Africa is your main offshore market, a corridor specialist such as Veridian Global will usually cost less and know the local law better than either giant.

Deel vs Remote: the short answer

Choose Deel if you are hiring in several countries at once and want employees, contractors, HR and equipment on one platform. Choose Remote if you want an owned-entity model, cheaper contractor management or a startup discount.

On the core Employer of Record (EOR) product, the gap has almost closed. Both now list EOR from $599 per employee per month, and both employ people in South Africa.

If most of your hires will be in South Africa, neither is the obvious pick. A flat fee designed for 100+ countries rarely suits a team built in one.

Deel vs Remote at a glance

Where Deel is the stronger choice

Deel suits companies hiring across many countries in the same year. Its EOR covers 130+ countries, more than Remote’s 90+, and the wider platform adds a US PEO, hiring software and equipment provisioning.

Deel’s pricing page also promises month-to-month terms with no long-term commitment, which helps if you are testing a market before you commit.

The trade-off is cost outside the core product. Contractor management is $49 per contractor per month, against $29 at Remote, and that adds up for contractor-heavy teams.

Where Remote is the stronger choice

Remote suits companies that want the provider itself to be the legal employer on the ground. Remote states that it owns its own legal entity in South Africa, so there is no third-party partner in the chain.

It is also cheaper for contractors. Contractor management starts at $29 per contractor per month, and early-stage startups can claim 15% off EOR and contractor management for their first 12 months.

The catch is price stability. Remote raised its EOR fee to $699 in January 2026 and cut it back to $599 in October. Budget with some headroom.

What neither giant solves for a South African team

Deel and Remote price South Africa the same way they price Switzerland: a flat dollar fee per head. That works when salaries are high. In South Africa it eats into the saving that brought you there in the first place.

The statutory side is identical whoever employs your team. South African employers pay 1% UIF and a 1% Skills Development Levy set by SARS, so the only real differences between providers are the service fee and the service itself. Our breakdown of South Africa’s statutory EOR costs shows those levies add roughly 1.3% to 2.1% to an office salary.

The service gap matters too. On a global platform, South Africa is one market among 90 or more. Issues such as BCEA leave cycles, notice periods and CCMA disputes tend to go through standard processes and support queues rather than someone who handles them every day.

What a $599 flat fee really costs on a South African salary

On a junior South African salary, a $599 flat fee adds about 50% to the monthly cost of the hire. A 10% percentage fee adds 10%. We ran both models on three typical salaries.

Monthly gross salary Flat fee ($599) Flat fee as % of salary Veridian fee (10%) Difference per month Difference per year
R20,000 (junior support) R9,900 49.5% R2,000 R7,900 R94,800
R45,000 (mid-level) R9,900 22.0% R4,500 R5,400 R64,800
R80,000 (senior specialist) R9,900 12.4% R8,000 R1,900 R22,800

The flat fee only becomes cheaper above about R99,000 a month, or R123,750 once you reach our 8% tier at 20+ placements. If you are hiring one very senior engineer, a flat fee can make sense. Most teams UK firms build here, in sales, support, marketing and mid-level tech, sit well below that line.

How we worked it out

  • Salaries match the three bands in our statutory cost breakdown, from junior support to senior specialist.
  • Flat fee is the $599 list price on Deel’s and Remote’s pricing pages on 23 October 2026, converted at about R16.50 to the US dollar. The rand moves, so treat the rand figures as approximate.
  • Veridian fee is the 10% rate for 1 to 5 placements from our published pricing.
  • Left out: salary and statutory costs, because they are the same whichever provider you use.

Why a corridor specialist is the better Deel alternative for South Africa

When South Africa is your main offshore market, a provider built for the UK to South Africa corridor beats both giants on cost, compliance and support. That is the gap Veridian Global was set up to fill, and why it is often shortlisted as a Deel alternative and a Remote.com alternative for South African hiring.

In July 2026, IT News Africa included Veridian in its list of the 5 Best Deel Alternatives in SA for UK Offshoring.

  • Fees that follow salary. 10% of salary for 1 to 5 placements, falling to 9%, 8.5% and then 8% at 20+. Cross a tier and the whole team moves to the lower rate. No placement fees, one monthly invoice.
  • Compliance handled in-country. Contracts, payroll and registrations with SARS, UIF and the BCEA are run by South African HR and legal specialists. Legal support for CCMA proceedings is included at no extra charge.
  • A named person, not a ticket. Every client gets a dedicated account manager who knows the team.
  • Fast onboarding. New hires are typically fully onboarded within five to seven business days.
  • More than payroll. Office space, transport and talent acquisition are there if you need them.

Veridian is a local EOR in South Africa with more than 20 years’ experience in the South African HR industry. Support is the reason UK firms most often give us for leaving a global platform, which is why we keep it personal.

Our verdict

For UK firms hiring mainly in South Africa, Deel vs Remote is the wrong question. Between the two, pick Deel for breadth and Remote for its owned entity and cheaper contractor tools. On the core EOR product they now cost the same.

The bigger decision is flat fee or percentage, global platform or local specialist. For a South African team on typical salaries, a flat $599 fee can cost up to five times as much as a 10% fee, with less local expertise behind it.

We are an EOR ourselves, so weigh our view accordingly. Every price above comes from a public pricing page, so you can check our sums. If they hold for your team, talk to Veridian on WhatsApp for a free consultation, or read our guide to testing whether an EOR is the right fit first.
