Overview
- Start with who employs your staff in South Africa. Shortlist providers that are the legal employer through their own local entity, not a platform routing you through a third party.
- Eliminate on paper before you book a demo. A handful of documents and questions will cut most of the field in an afternoon.
- Test with a live role. A provider that finds, hires and keeps the right person has proved more than any pitch deck can.
- Choose a model where you pay nothing until someone starts. No upfront payment means the provider carries the risk, not you.
- Our view: judge an EOR by its first hire, not its first call.
Where should you start looking for an EOR?
Start with who can legally employ your staff in South Africa, then narrow down. An Employer of Record (EOR) is only as good as its local set-up. A platform covering 150 countries tells you little about how it handles payroll, UIF or a CCMA referral in one of them.
Build a longlist of five or six providers from three places:
- Global platforms that own a South African entity.
- Local specialists based in South Africa.
- Referrals from UK businesses already hiring there.
Comparison sites are useful for names, but they tend to rank on software and country count. Your risk sits in South African labour law, so give local depth more weight. We explain why in why a boutique local EOR might outperform big global EORs. New to the model? Start with where to learn about Employer of Record.
How do you eliminate EORs that are not a good fit?
Ask for proof, not promises. Every EOR says it is compliant. Only some can show it. These checks cut a longlist to two or three finalists.

The Letter of Good Standing is the quickest test. The Compensation Fund issues it once an employer’s assessment is paid in full, and it can be checked online with its unique certificate number. Use the Department of Employment and Labour’s verification tool, and confirm the trade name matches the certificate and that the letter is still within its valid period.
Any EOR worth shortlisting, Veridian Global included, should send all of this without hesitation.
Why can a sales pitch not tell you if an EOR fits?
Because every pitch covers the same ground. Compliance, speed, a clean dashboard and dedicated support are table stakes. A demo proves the software works. It does not prove the provider can find the right person for your role, or keep them.
Fit shows up in the work: how well they grasp your brief, the quality of the first shortlist, and whether the hire is still with you a year later.
What is the best way to test an EOR before you commit?
Give your finalists one live role and judge what comes back. It is the cheapest due diligence available, and it tests what you are actually buying.
Score the test on four points:
- The brief call. Did they ask about the role, team and salary range, or only about your budget?
- The shortlist. How quickly did it arrive, and how many CVs were worth an interview?
- Salary advice. Did they benchmark against the South African market, or repeat your number back?
- The offer stage. Were the contract, start date and onboarding clear before you signed?
How we score against this test. When a UK client briefs us on a role, we aim to deliver a shortlist within 3 working days. On average, 8 in every 10 shortlisted candidates reach a first interview. Once you have chosen your hire, we onboard them within 48 to 72 hours. We publish these numbers because they are the ones we would ask any EOR for. If a provider cannot give you its own, weigh that too. For the full timeline, see how to cut your time to hire.
Why does “no upfront payment” matter?
It moves the risk from you to the provider. If you pay nothing until the right person starts, the EOR only earns when it gets the hire right. That is a built-in quality test.
Getting it wrong is expensive. Research from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) found that a poor hire at mid-manager level on a £42,000 salary can cost a business more than £132,000, once wasted training, lost productivity and increased staff turnover are counted. The same REC research found UK businesses failing to hire the right person for two out of five roles.
A provider that wants deposits or a placement fee before you have met a single candidate is asking you to carry that risk. If a hire does not work out later, a local EOR should also run the exit lawfully for you, as covered in what happens when a South African hire doesn’t work out.
How does Veridian Global prove itself first?
We find your candidates free of charge. There is no finder’s fee and no recruitment placement fee. You only pay once a hire you have chosen starts work, through one monthly EOR fee.
- You make the final call on every candidate.
- Fees start at 10% of gross salary, billed monthly, and fall as your team grows. A £24,000 salary works out at £200 a month. See our pricing or run your own figures in the EOR cost calculator.
The track record behind it: Many employees for UK organisations, with a 90% employee retention rate. Retention is the number we would point to first, because it shows we found the right people, not just available ones.
A recent example. An UK HR business asked us to find a Operations Assistant. After a 30-minute brief call, we sent a shortlist of 5 candidates within 2 working days, and the client interviewed 4 of them. Their chosen hire started 1 week after that first call and is still with the team 11 months on. The client paid nothing for the search, and the first invoice covered only the monthly EOR fee once the hire had started.
With more than 20 years in South African HR and labour law, our team in Cape Town runs your Employer of Record in South Africa set-up end to end. And if you outgrow the EOR later, your team can move with you, as set out in outgrowing your EOR.
Our view: shortlist on paper, choose on performance
The right EOR is the one that has already delivered for you. Use the document checks to cut the field. Then let your finalists compete on a real role.
A provider confident in its recruitment should be willing to search for free until it finds your hire. If one will not, weigh that heavily. Comparing us with a global platform? Our Deel alternative page sets out the differences.
The bottom line
Most EORs sound alike at pitch stage. Cut the list with documents, test the finalists with a live role, and pick the provider that proves itself before it asks for payment.

FAQs
How many EOR providers should I compare before choosing one?
Two or three finalists is enough. Use document checks to cut a longlist of five or six, then test the finalists with a live role before you sign anything.
What documents should a South African EOR be able to show me?
Its CIPC registration, a SARS Tax Compliance Status PIN, proof of UIF registration and a valid Compensation Fund Letter of Good Standing, which you can verify online.
Do I pay Veridian Global to find candidates?
No. We source and shortlist candidates free of charge, with no finder’s fee or placement fee. You only pay the monthly EOR fee once your chosen hire starts.
